FITTING
See the finished garment measurement
charts below for actual measurements.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to check coat
length, sleeve length, and back
neck-to-waist lengths BEFORE cutting
out. When standing, the coat should
cover one
half to three
quarters of the buttocks. When sitting
in the saddle the coat should not be
long enough to sit on, but should come
down slightly onto the thigh in front.
The sleeve length should allow a bit of
shirt cuff to show when the arms are in
the riding position. Be sure that you
have adequate room across the
shoulders. Some of our customers have
told us that they prefer wider lapels
than those in this pattern. It is very
simple to add width to the lapel areas
of the front and front facing pieces.
We highly recommend
making a sample coat out of an
inexpensive fabric similar in weight to
your coat fabric.

FABRICS
AND
NOTIONS
This pattern is designed
to be used with fabrics such as wools,
wool blends, and other suitings. Any
typical lining fabric such as polyester,
rayon, or nylon, is suitable. Use
fusible interfacing- pick the proper
weight so that the interfacing doesn’t
cause a ridge when fused to the fabric.
There are some tightly woven suiting
fabrics that don’t work well with
fusibles- we then recommend that you
buy a good book on tailoring which will
give you more traditional tailoring
techniques. But fortunately there is a
wide range of fusible interfacings
available that are meant for tailoring.
The under collar is made
from a thick non-woven material and is
sewn on with NO seam allowances. If
you’ve never seen this type of collar
construction, look at a man’s suit
coat. is Ultrasuede™ is an excellent
under collar material and does not have
to be cut on the bias.
