FITTING
See the finished garment measurement chart below for actual measurements. It is VERY IMPORTANT to check coat length, sleeve length, and back neck-to-waist lengths BEFORE cutting out. Be sure that you have adequate room across the shoulders and consider how the sleeves will look during riding. We highly recommend making a sample coat out of an inexpensive fabric similar in weight to your coat fabric.

Since breeches are meant to fit snugly, you will almost certainly have to do some altering to get a perfect fit. We recommend making a sample pair out of an inexpensive stretch fabric to test the fit. Check out crotch depth, leg length, and knee and calf fit. Use the chart below to choose the correct size and blend sizes if necessary.  Compare the pattern thigh, knee, and calf measurements to body measurements. These breeches are designed to fit VERY snugly. For very stretchy fabrics, the breech leg measurements should match or be 1”-2” LESS than body measurements. For less stretchy fabrics allow 1/2”-1” of ease.

FABRICS AND NOTIONS We recommend using wool gabardine for the coat, though other suiting fabrics can be used. Dressage coats are usually black. Any typical lining fabric such as polyester, rayon, or nylon, is suitable. Use fusible interfacing-  pick the proper weight so that the interfacing doesn’t cause a ridge when fused to the fabric. There are some tightly woven suiting fabrics that don’t work well with fusible-  we then recommend that you buy a good book on tailoring which will give you more traditional tailoring techniques. But fortunately there is a wide range of fusible interfacings available that are meant for tailoring. The under collar is made from a thick non-woven material and is sewn on with NO seam allowances. If you’ve never seen this type of collar construction, look at a man’s suit coat.  Ultrasuede™ is an excellent under collar material and does not have to be cut on the bias.

The breeches MUST be made from medium to heavyweight stretch fabric with at least a 30% crosswise stretch (10” of fabric stretches to 13”) and preferably a Lycra ™ blend. VIEW B works best with stretch woven. VIEW A can be made from stretch woven or knits. Use a knit interfacing for the waistband and be sure to preshrink the interfacing. The seat insert can be made from 2-3 oz. smooth or suede leather (deerskin is recommended) or synthetic suede.
