Helmet Covers & Half Chaps Patterns Item#: 1078 $6.00 This pattern includes three different helmet covers. The TRADITIONAL cover fits the older style caliente helmets.It has stitched and taped seams for durability, an elasticized back, and covered button or pompom on top. It also has a brim with enclosed stiffener. The STRETCH cover fits the newer, larger safety helmets. It requires stretch fabric and has an elasticized bottom. It is designed to fit a helmet that already has a brim. Both covers have ribbons ties in front. The WINTER cover is made of Polartec™ fleece fabric and has a neck wrap for extra warmth. This pattern also includes half chaps with inner leg reinforcements, Velcro tab closures, and elastic foot straps. FITTING THE HALF CHAPS
Measure the fullest part of your calf to determine your size.
Also measure your lower leg height: the distance from the back of your knee to the top of your heel. Our pattern as drawn will fit 16”-18”. Adjust at alteration lines if necessary.
MATERIALS
Make the TRADITIONAL helmet cover from shiny satin-type fabrics such as nylon taffeta. Use satin ribbon for taping the seams and grosgrain ribbon for under the brim. The brim stiffener can be cut from thin plastic sheeting, available at craft or quilting stores. The STRETCH cover requires spandex stretch fabric such as swimsuit fabric (spandex is the generic name for Lycra ™). The fabric should have a minimum 50% lengthwise and crosswise stretch. Use grosgrain ribbon for the tie for either helmet. Either cover can made from two different colors, though the yardages are given for solid color covers. The WINTER cover is made from stretch Polartec™ (contains spandex) from Malden Mills, except for the neck wrap section which is made from regular Polartec™.
The half chaps can be made from suede leather, smooth leather, or Ultrasuede™. Use 3-5 oz. Leather, keeping in mind whether or not your sewing machine can handle the heavier leather. For Ultrasuede™, use the heaviest weight possible.
