page for sources for the materials and notions needed to make these items.
Use sturdy, stiff water resistant fabrics. Most stall curtains are made from
nylon Cordura™. Acrylic canvas or other marine and awning fabrics can also be
used. Lettering and appliqués can be made from any sturdy woven fabric. For
tieback trim and optional front curtain trim, use nylon or polyester webbing.
For binding on the valances and name panel use nylon foldover braid.

LEG WRAPS
Controversy exists about whether or not natural or synthetic fibers make the
best wraps. The arguments for natural fibers are that they are more absorbent,
cooler, and less irritating to the horse’s skin. Synthetic fibers, such as
polyester, are said to be more adsorbent (meaning the fibers attract liquid
without drawing it into the fiber itself), less expensive, longer-lasting, more
washable, and hold color better. With our pattern you can choose whichever you
prefer. Directions are given for two kinds of leg wraps- fleece and quilted.
For fleece leg wraps use lighter weight fleece. For quilted leg wraps we suggest
a medium weight cotton or cotton blend fabric for the outer layer, a lightweight
quilt batting or thin foam for the middle layer, and terry cloth for the lining.
FLEECE
1-2/3 YDS of 45” fleece or 1 YD of 60” fleece FOR
thread
QUILTED
7/8 YD of 45” wide for EACH LAYER or 1/2 YD of 60” wide for
EACH LAYER
5-1/2 YDS extra wide double fold bias tape
thread
The same
arguments for natural and synthetic fabrics apply as for leg wraps. Polo
bandages should be made out of thick, fleecy, stretchy knit materials. Old
blankets or sweatshirt material can be used. Polyester fleece fabric such as
Polartec™ is an excellent choice. For standing bandages us non-stretch synthetic
material. Flannel is another good bandage fabric. Use non-raveling fabric if
possible.
GROOMING TOTE BAG
We recommend making the tote bag from heavier weight coated nylon Cordura™, but
other sturdy fabrics can be used such as thick canvas. We recommend twill tape
or grosgrain ribbon for the edge bindings, because heavier materials such as
webbing will be too thick to sew through at the side seams.
1 YD of 45” wide fabric or 7/8 YD of 60” wide fabric
2-1/2 YDS 1” wide twill tape
1-3/8 YDS 2” wide twill tape
2-1/8 YDS 1” wide webbing

Make the apron
from sturdy fabrics such as cotton duck or denim.
1-1/2 YDS of 45” wide fabric or 1-1/8 YDS of 60” fabric
2 YDS extra wide double fold bias tape
strap adjuster (also called Ladder Lock buckle)
